MovieSwap is a virtual DVD platform which allows users to access, view, and swap an unlimited library of movies made available from physical DVDs uploaded to the cloud.

MovieSwap is a startup with a certain goal in mind; to bring movie streaming to the masses, but with a twist. Based in Paris, the company is looking to do something fresh and inventive when it comes to streaming movies or television shows.

What is setting their company apart from other similar video streaming services is the procedures in how they are obtaining the movies themselves.

“Hey, wanna see my movie collection?”

Movie buffs often show off their collections with their fellow film-loving friends and trade-off movies between each other.

MovieSwap works similar to this easy exchange and they are calling it “freeing the movies.”

Anyone can send their DVDs or Blu-rays to the company’s warehouse, where they can store the movies from their original source onto a cloud. While the film is on the cloud, any users will be able to stream whatever films or shows are on there.

The movies and shows will be streaming using VLC video software, which is an open source program which can allow video to be streaming through a web browser or a network.

Here’s what Co-founder and CEO Cyril Barthel had to say in a recent press release:

“We’ve built an incredible piece of technology that can collect, store, and remotely play millions of DVDs. With the help of the community, this online universal movie library will quickly become a reality.”

Kickstarter bound

The popular and ubiquitous crowd funding platform Kickstarter is being utilized for MovieSwap. The company launched their Kickstarter campaign  on March 8th and will go on for the next month and a half, ending on April 15th.

As of March 9th, their Kickstarter has obtained over $22,000 of their $36,000 goal.

Those who back the company on Kickstarter will be able to access the MovieSwap service for free.

A hopeful competitor to Netflix and other streaming services

MovieSwap is planning to be a freemium service, where its users may have to be a certain monthly few or there will be some microtransactions involved.

“Our goal is to give the power back to the people by enabling them to digitally watch the films they already own. We don’t want the 200 billion dollars invested by the American people on their DVDs to go up in smoke because the technology is now obsolete,” it’s time to declutter, adds Barthet.

The company is looking to be the first video streaming service to be funded by its users and is designing the service to be available on any platform with a screen.
