Instagram just dropped a blast from the past with a brand-new feature that lets users slap a song on their profiles—hello, MySpace vibes!

Announced on August 22, 2024, this move is all about cranking up personal expression and giving users a fresh way to connect.

For those of us old enough, remember the glory days of MySpace when your profile was a musical tapestry of your life? Well, Instagram is bringing that back.

“We’re excited to announce that you can now add a song to your profile, giving you more ways to express yourself through music on Instagram! Swipe through to learn more,” the company writes in an Instagram post announcing the feature.

Users will soon be able to pick from a diverse library of tracks, letting them showcase their musical tastes right on their profiles. Pop star Sabrina Carpenter teased the feature, hinting at some serious bangers ready for selection.

But this isn’t just a nostalgic nod; it’s also a clever play to keep Instagram relevant against TikTok’s music-driven content craze.

Imagine scrolling through your feed and discovering not just photos but the soundtracks to your friends’ lives. Brands and influencers are likely licking their chops at the thought of new ways to engage audiences through curated sound.

How to Add Music to Your Instagram Profile Page

  1. Open Instagram:
    • Launch the Instagram app on your mobile device and log in to your account if you haven’t already.
  2. Go to Your Profile:
    • Tap on your profile picture or the profile icon in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  3. Edit Profile:
    • Click on the “Edit Profile” button located near your profile picture.
  4. Add Music:
    • Scroll down until you find the “Music” section (this might be labeled differently based on updates).
    • Tap on “Add Music” or “Music” to start adding songs.
  5. Search for Songs:
    • Use the search bar to find the song you want to add. You can search by song title, artist, or genre.
    • Browse through the available options until you find your desired track.
  6. Select a Song:
    • Tap on the song you want to add. You may have the option to choose a specific part of the song if Instagram allows it.
  7. Save Changes:
    • After selecting your song, make sure to save any changes by tapping “Done” or “Save” at the top right corner of the screen.
  8. Check Your Profile:
    • Return to your profile page to ensure that the music has been added successfully. The song should now appear in your profile section.

Tips:

  • Make sure your app is updated to the latest version for all features to work seamlessly.
  • If you don’t see the music option, it could be due to regional restrictions or account settings.

Of course, this shiny new feature doesn’t come without its hurdles. Instagram has to navigate the labyrinth of music licensing laws to make sure all those sweet tunes are good to go.

Plus, users will have to decide just how public they want their musical choices—are you ready to share your guilty pleasures with the world?

As Instagram rolls this out, they’re clearly blending nostalgia with modern-day social media dynamics. We’re all waiting to see how this shakes up profiles and how long Instagram plans to keep this around.
