This is what that square iPhone triple camera monstrosity will look like in-hand

Eww, gross.

If you hoped against hope that the 2019 crop of iPhones wouldn’t end up with that square camera bump, maybe it’s time to stop hoping.

Designer Ben Geskin built some physical mock-ups of the devices based on all the renders and leaked schematics and well, it doesn’t look that bad (just kidding, it’s terrible).

Think Different

In this age of barely changed iPhones and other Apple products, it’s easy to forget that the company’s maxim used to be” “Think Different.”

Maybe we all needed reminding of that fact, a truism pointed out by Ben Gerskin. The whole mobile industry is putting camera modules like ducks in a row, which I’ve never seen on a film camera. The triangular triple-lens cluster is pretty common, using multiple lenses to make up for non-telephoto lenses.

Maybe an Apple designer stumbled across this third-party case for the iPhone 4 and thought “Oh, that looks like a good idea!” Maybe it gives Apple more space for a larger battery, something that all of its users always want. It could even be that by putting the three cameras in a triangle, it’s easier to calculate distances for ARKit’s many Augmented Reality apps.

Whatever the reasons behind it, the square, triple-camera (or four in the larger device) bump doesn’t look like it’s going away. It’s certainly a polarizing design, but is it enough to rectify Apple’s iPhone sales slump? I guess we’ll find out in the fall.

What do you think? Do you like the triple-camera square or is it a hard pass? Let us know down below in the comments or carry the discussion over to our Twitter or Facebook.
