Technology has always been as dynamic as the rushing wind. And in the same manner that the wind changes direction, so do the trends that rule the computer science realm. While this may seem like a major disadvantage (in the same way that we view anything fickle as disadvantageous), the ever-changing nature of technology is exactly what makes it so wonderful. This is because it keeps everybody on their toes. It forces everyone to keep searching for better methods and innovating newer technologies.
In a more business-like setting, the fickleness of technological trends prevents any form of monopoly over a certain technology. Tech giants are unable to buy a single piece of technology — no matter how trendy it is— because, like all trends, they eventually become obsolete. This also grants the smaller, less popular companies a chance to disrupt the environment (in a good way), especially if they bring something unique to the table.

We first saw this technological trend in phones. Initially, this technology was meant to help phones take better pictures. We’ve even had smart assistants that existed long before AI was implemented into phone cameras. Now, we’re on the verge of fully autonomous cars, more intelligent chatbots, and a wide array of smart devices that make use of machine learning. This trend goes hand in hand with the Internet of Things because of the way that the AI is able to adjust depending on the data it gathers.
Virtual machines are still the norm when it comes to system partitioning, but even VM is slowly being usurped with the emergence of containers. While containers function with the same principles as virtual machines, they are, in essence, able to function on a higher level than VMs. This is because containers are able to virtualize an entire operating system versus the system partitions that a VM makes. This technology is rather difficult to explain, but the core essence is that this technology should be able to improve how projects are developed, tested, and collaborated upon. One principle program that encapsulates this principle is Docker. There are a plethora of benefits that can be gained by shifting to this technology, but like all new things, this requires some Docker training.
The Internet of Things
The concept of the smart home is slowly coming to fruition. The Internet of Things is based on the principle that every device should be able to connect to a network in order to interact with other devices on the same network. For computer science, this means that projects will become much more portable and shareable. One prime example of how IoT is making an impact on the field of computer science is through OpenStack, a cloud operating system that grants developers the essential controls that they would have in a local system.
