1. Raw materials 

Rollerblades are products of modern technology where materials such as copolymer plastics, high-grade polyurethane, and carbon fiber are used in constructing most of the boots or shells and the wheels. 

Steel, urethane, or harder nylon is used for most brake and chassis components. The frames can be made of carbon fiber, aluminum, or titanium.

The boot’s interior has a liner that can be a plastic foam or a cloth. Steel is also used for buckles, ball bearings, and other parts of the rollerblades. 

The use of carbon fiber is one of the revolutions in the construction of rollerblades, especially in some parts of the shell and the frame.

This material is lighter than aluminum, one of the main features of constructing a quality chassis. 

The cost of production is considerably high, but the wheel’s unique lightness, power transmission, and stability properties are guaranteed.

4. The manufacturing process

Rollerblades are constructed using an assembly line process where all parts of the inline skate move down the conveyor belt where assembling is done piece by piece as explained below:

#1. Making the Boot ShellThe boot shells are constructed using a process known as injection molding, where urethane plastic is injected into the mold to make the boot shell. If color is needed, you can add a dye. When the molding process is finished, the finished boot is ejected by the injection-molding machine. 

#2. Inserting the linerPlastic foam or soft cloth is cut into several sizes and inserted into the boot shell. The liner is cut into dimensions that conform to the foot of the skater.

#3. Adding attachments The remaining shell cuff, metal buckles, tongue, and Velcro or plastic fasteners are added to the shell. Most of these parts are prefabricated when they are bought. 

#4. Assembling the wheelsThe next step is where the frame, including bearings and wheels, is attached to the shell using a coupling system or rivets. The frame is attached first then the wheels are arranged in a row and put into the frame. The frame and boot are molded as one part on some cheaper models.

Once the rollerblade has been fully assembled, it is put in a box and delivered to stores for sale. 

Parts of the modern Rollerblade 

With the improvement in technologies, rollerblades now have modern parts as listed below:

  • Polyurethane wheels that vary in diameter (size) and durometer (hardness).
  • Trucks are made of light aluminum or plastic. 
  • Buckles are made of Velcro straps, plastic, or cloth laces. 
  • Boot shells are made of leather or a combination of polyurethane plastic and leather. 
  • Brakes are made of polyurethane or hard rubber. 
  • Liners are made of high-density foam and nylon clots that absorb sweat.
