Meta has found great success with its smart glasses, created in partnership with Ray-Ban. These glasses, called Stories, allow users to capture photos and videos for social media and even feature an AI assistant.
Their popularity has been so high that Meta has even introduced luxury versions for the high-fashion market. However, one major thing has been missing: a built-in display.
Now, Meta is reportedly working on a new version of its smart glasses with a screen, aiming to make them even more useful. But this added convenience comes at a high price.
According to Bloomberg, the new glasses, codenamed Hypernova, could cost between $1,000 and $1,400.
If this is true, they would be significantly more expensive than most other smart glasses, which usually cost around $500. Meta is expected to release them by the end of 2025.
Currently, smart glasses with displays usually have two screens, one for each eye. Some models even offer vision correction for users who wear prescription glasses.
But Meta’s approach is different. Instead of a full, immersive display like in VR headsets, they are reportedly using a “monocular” display, meaning only the right eye will have a screen.
The screen will sit in the lower right corner, making it visible when looking downward. This setup allows users to see digital information without blocking their full view of the real world.
The Hypernova glasses will offer various features, including taking photos, viewing media, checking maps, and receiving notifications from apps like WhatsApp.
Users will control the interface using touch gestures, such as swiping or tapping the stem of the glasses.
Additionally, Meta is developing a special wristband, codenamed Ceres, which will let users control the glasses with hand movements, like pinching to zoom or rotating the wrist. This wristband will likely be included with the glasses.
These smart glasses will be powered by a Qualcomm processor and run a custom version of Android.
