Range Rover is working on a car that warns of you looming potholes

Hate potholes as much as everyone else? Range Rover is working on a solution that detects and reports potholes.

Potholes, we all hate them. Some more than others. They’re everywhere, they seem to never get fixed, and the punishment your car goes through driving over them is almost painful. I mean, the list goes on. Something has to be done, which is why one car manufacturer, in particular, is looking to solve the problem.

Jaguar Land Rover is working on a technology that helps cars detect potholes they come across driving while simultaneously transmitting the data in real-time with other vehicles and road authorities, essentially helping road crews prioritize repairs.

The vehicles used in the company’s testing, Range Rover Evoque and the Discovery Sport are equipped with sensors, which monitor the roads surface. The sensors are able to categorize potholes and identify the ones that are most severe, while tacking on location data over a cellular network.

Jaguar Land Rover’s Global Connected Car Director Dr. Mike Bell says:

While this gives our customers a more comfortable ride, we think there is a huge opportunity to turn the information from these vehicle sensors into ‘big data’ and share it for the benefit of other road users. This could help prevent billions of pounds of vehicle damage and make road repairs more effective.

The company is also working on a feature that warns drivers ahead of time of an impending pothole coming their way. As you approach a pothole, a warning notification is displayed on your windshield, as pictured above.

The program is still being developed which means this isn’t something we’ll see in the next year or two. In the meantime, you’ll have to avoid those potholes like some sort of neanderthal.
