Have you ever taken a one-minute break from work, but found yourself scrolling through Facebook or Instagram for 30 minutes? Or have you tried working but ended up getting distracted by the smallest things, like a fly landing on your desk, for instance? A lot of people have these issues, particularly if they generally have problems focusing on tasks. 

When you’re at work, it’s not uncommon to get distracted – after all, you want the day to end so you can go home, shower, and relax. Working in tech is no exception. When you work as a web developer, software developer, data scientist, or any related job, you may get distracted when you feel overwhelmed with your tasks. 

Fortunately, there are some methods to help you stay focused on your tasks and avoid procrastination. So, read on to discover some tips on how to stay focused and aware at your tech job. 

  1. Get Rid of Any Distraction

The irony is that you have a tech job and tech is also the same thing that can get you distracted. For instance, you may decide to open your Facebook page for a few minutes, check out your Twitter notifications, and see what new stories your friends have posted on Instagram. 

Still, if you want to be productive and finish all your tasks on time, it’s best to stay offline as much as you can. Easier said than done. One piece of advice that could help is to keep your phone in a different room if possible, and on silent so you don’t get distracted by any notification. You may also want to get rid of anything that might distract you in your surrounding area and move to a quiet environment. 

  1. Track All Your Activities

Whether you’re developing software or working on a website, you probably have several tasks you have to complete in a single day. Especially if you do a lot of things throughout the day, the chances are that you might get lost in all the chaos and lose focus. So, having a notepad around can be very helpful as it will let you keep track of all your activities. 

Whenever you finish an activity and move to the next one, you will write down the task you finished and the one you’re about to start. Also, make sure to write down the time of the activity whenever you switch. 

  1. Prioritize Tasks

Most likely, you have many tasks that are more important than others. So, it’s ideal to prioritize them. For this to be easier to do, you can create a to-do list where you rank every task depending on its importance. This way, you will work through them more naturally rather than not knowing where to start. 

  1. Divide Your Day Properly

Another thing you can do is to divide your day into free-for-all time and uninterrupted time. Think of something you must do and include it in the uninterrupted time. Then, come back to your note during the free-for-all time. You will spend a lot of time on the tasks, but at least you will get a lot of focused time. That’s when you’ll do most of the work. 

  1. Know When to Take Breaks

Even though you must be focused on your tasks most of the time, it’s always important to take short breaks and rest. This is especially important if you are doing something very difficult, or if you stare at the screen a lot and need to rest your eyes. But make sure to time your breaks accordingly and don’t spend too much time procrastinating. 

Set up alarms once in a while and go for a 5-10 minute break or decide to take a break after finishing an important task and before starting a new one. You will come back with fresh forces.
