The dangers of the internet
As such a vast expanse of information and connectivity; the internet is an incredibly powerful tool but an equally dangerous place for the ill-informed.
As such a vast expanse of information and connectivity; the internet is an incredibly powerful tool but an equally dangerous place for the ill-informed. The dangers that lie in wait online are more than just viruses and Trojans aiming to lurk in your system.
Here are your three biggest threats anytime you find yourself on the internet:
Firstly; viruses, Trojans and various other computer nasties are often attached to downloadable files from untrustworthy sources. Once you initiate the download, the files you wanted could allow these malicious files into your system and this can lead to data corruption or even total failure of the device.
Anti-virus software, such as Avast, will protect your system by stopping Malware from accessing your system. Usually, the download will be paused pending your approval – it is wise to cancel the download while you have the chance as some more advanced viruses are difficult to remove.
Hacking and Fraud
When entering your personal, sensitive information online; you need to be certain that it will not be shared or sold to those who would misuse it. If a website looks untrustworthy; it would be wise to leave as soon as possible but spotting an untrustworthy website is more difficult than it may seem.
Using an extension, such as Web of Trust, will offer a trust rating for any website you attempt to access – the higher the rating, the safer the website is considered to be. Sites with low ratings are perceived to be unsafe and should be avoided.
Trolls and Illegal Activity
For some time now, online Trolls have taken it upon themselves to maliciously criticize or insult almost everything that is posted publicly on the internet. This is far from harmless fun as it is now a criminal offense to troll – it is best to report any instances you encounter to the website owner.
In terms of illegal activity; the internet is a hive for those pretending to be someone or something they are not. Never disclose personal information online to anyone you don’t know, even if you do know them; it is wise to exercise caution.
