Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) is targeting Signal users by blocking all Signal.me across the platform.

This restriction, first reported by Disruptionist (via TechCrunch), affects everyone trying to post Signal.me links on X.

Despite the widespread nature of the block, X has yet to issue an official statement explaining the decision.

X has previously blocked links to competitors like Substack, citing security and spam prevention, though critics say it’s to limit competition.

What is Signal?

Signal, the affected service, is an encrypted messaging application operated by a non-profit foundation. Unlike popular messaging apps like WhatsApp, Signal emphasizes privacy and security.

Here’s how Signal works: Every message, file, image, or video sent through the app is end-to-end encrypted, meaning only the sender and recipient can access the content. Even Signal themselves can’t crack it. And that’s by design.

The timing of this block is particularly notable due to ongoing disruptions within the federal government The app’s strong encryption has made it a preferred choice for those concerned about privacy.

Again, there’s a lot of uncertainty here; X still isn’t sharing any information about why they’re blocking links on a platform that promotes free speech at a $40-month subscription.

What are your thoughts on X’s decision to block Signal.me links? Do you think it’s a genuine move for security, or is it more about limiting competition? Share your perspective in the comments below.
