Artificial intelligence and robots seem to be ruling the minds of Hollywood filmmakers. A.I. happens to be an integral part of the plot in a number of upcoming movies, which include both sequels from blockbuster franchises like Avengers (Avengers: Age of Ultron) and The Terminator (Terminator: Genisys), along with smaller endeavors like Ex Machina. Recently, an official trailer of Ex Machina has been released, leaving sci-fi lovers around the globe absolutely startled.
With Ex Machina, Alex Garland, who is primarily known as the screenwriter of the widely acclaimed Danny Boyle movie 28 Days Later, is making his writing/directing debut. Garland has written the screenplay for several other successful movies of the sci-fi genre, including Danny Boyle’s Sunshine, Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go, Peter Travis’ Dredd, and so on.
Chilling Climax in Store for Viewers
The star cast of Garland’s first project as a writer/director includes Oscar Isaac as Nathan, a reclusive CEO, and Domhnall Gleeson as 24-year old computer coder Caleb Smith, who works under Nathan. Alicia Vikander plays Ava, an artificially-intelligent being.
In the film, Caleb is seen winning a work competition, and as a reward he is allowed to travel to the CEO’s remote home to take part in a special experiment. As a part of the experiment, Nathan asks Caleb to interact with his revolutionary creation Ava, the first creature in the world to have real artificial intelligence.
Caleb eventually starts romancing Ava and as this human/A.I. relationship grows, it becomes clear that Nathan doesn’t have the right intentions. This turn of events will possibly make the story of the movie extremely gripping; at least sci-fi aficionados around the world are assuming so.
The distribution rights of Ex Machina are with Universal Pictures and A24. Besides the domestic teaser of the movie, an international trailer has also been released. While the international trailer is more story oriented, its US counterpart is not as detailed. However, both videos highlight the thriller/psycho-drama aspects of the upcoming movie. They also offer hints at twists that the film’s narrative might feature.
Apt Performance to Take the Audience to the World of A.I.
Ex Machina, as shown in the trailers, seems to have everything that will allow viewers to explore all the common themes of the A.I. sub-category. The movie appears to possess a setup that we normally associate with horror movies, so things should be quite intriguing.
The film’s cast includes some of the biggest names in the world of character acting. Viewers who have seen Isaac and Gleeson respectively in the 2013 releases Inside Llewyn Davis and About Time surely know how powerful their acting skills are. Vikander was also praised widely for her performance in Joe Wright’s 2012 romantic drama Anna Karenina.
Ex Machina will hit the theaters in the United States on April 10, 2015.
