ChatGPT now lets you use text and voice mode in the same screen

Instead of bouncing between modes, voice conversations will happen right inside your normal chat thread.

OpenAI quietly made ChatGPT less confusing. The company announced that ChatGPT’s voice mode is no longer living in a weird little side room. It now exists directly inside your regular chat.

Previously, using your voice with ChatGPT felt like stepping into an entirely different dimension.

You’d tap the voice button, whoosh over to a separate interface, and be greeted by a mysterious, pulsing blue orb.

You could talk to it, sure, but you couldn’t actually see what it was saying.

If you missed an answer (or simply zoned out for half a second, as humans tend to do), too bad, you had to exit voice mode and go back to text just to reread it.

Now, OpenAI is merging these two worlds. Instead of bouncing between modes, voice conversations will happen right inside your normal chat thread.

As you speak, ChatGPT will not only respond out loud but also display its answers in real time on your screen.

That means if it shows you an image, a map, or some other visual aid, you can actually, you know, see it while you’re talking.

This update makes the whole experience a lot more natural. You can casually talk to ChatGPT, watch its responses pop up like normal messages, and scroll back to earlier parts of the conversation without breaking the flow.

It’s basically like texting and calling at the same time, except your friend is an AI that knows a very concerning amount of trivia.

There’s still a small catch: when you’re done talking, you’ll need to manually tap “end” to exit voice mode. Once you do, you’re right back in regular text chat.

Good news for everyone: this updated voice mode is now the default experience and is rolling out across both web and mobile apps.

However, if you’re one of those people who genuinely loved the floating blue circle of solitude, OpenAI hasn’t abandoned you.

You can still go into Settings, find “Voice Mode,” and turn on the nostalgic “Separate mode.”
