At Google’s recent I/O conference, the spotlight was on Gemini AI, and now, it’s coming to cars

Just a day after the announcement, Volvo confirmed it will be the first automaker to integrate Gemini into its vehicles, partnering with Google for AI.

Volvo already uses Google’s Android Automotive system, which is built directly into its cars. Now, it’s taking things further by adding Gemini’s AI to the mix.

This means drivers will soon be able to speak to their cars in a more natural and conversational way.

For example, you could ask Gemini to translate languages, help with directions, locate specific places, or even explain sections of the car’s manual, all without needing to use robotic, specific commands.

The goal is to reduce the driver’s “cognitive load,” or mental effort, so they can focus more on the road. Essentially, Gemini will act like a smart co-pilot, helping drivers with various tasks while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes ahead.

Google had already announced that Gemini will soon be available in Android Auto, which connects your phone to your car.

That update is rolling out in the next few weeks. However, cars with the built-in Android Automotive system will get Gemini later this year. (via: The Verge)

Gemini will handle everything Google Assistant currently does, such as sending texts, playing music, or giving directions, but it will do so more smoothly and conversationally.

Volvo also serves as one of Google’s test platforms, meaning Volvo cars will get new AI and automotive updates before anyone else. In the past, this collaboration brought features like high-definition maps and YouTube for cars.

Google sees the car as an important next step for AI, especially since driving involves constant decision-making in complex environments.

With Gemini, apps like navigation will be able to do more, such as reporting traffic issues with a voice command.
