Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced a major new push into AI by creating a special division called the Meta Superintelligence Labs.
According to Bloomberg, this new group will lead all of Meta’s efforts to develop AI tools and technologies. This is Meta’s biggest move yet to catch up with other tech giants in the AI race.
The group will be led by Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI, who just joined Meta in a multibillion-dollar deal earlier this month.
He’ll take on the new role of Meta’s chief AI officer, making him one of the most powerful figures in the company’s AI strategy.
Wang will work closely with Nat Friedman, the former CEO of GitHub, who is partnering with him to guide the new AI division.
To beef up its AI team, Meta has hired 11 experts from top AI companies like Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and OpenAI. These new hires bring valuable experience from the leading edge of AI research.
To attract this talent, Meta has reportedly been offering massive salaries, sometimes more than $10 million, showing just how serious it is about becoming a leader in AI.
Zuckerberg has also been exploring big acquisitions to quickly strengthen Meta’s AI capabilities.
The company has held talks with several promising AI startups, like Mira Murati’s Thinking Machines Lab, Perplexity, and Ilya Sutskever’s Safe Superintelligence.
However, these discussions never led to official offers, mainly because of various disagreements or challenges.
Looking ahead, Zuckerberg shared in his memo, which CNBC published in full, that Meta plans to kick off research on its next generation of AI models.
The goal is to develop AI technology that can compete at the very top level within a year or so.
This next wave of AI research will focus on creating smarter and more capable AI systems, aiming to place Meta back at the forefront of the global AI race.
