Know that burning feeling in your eyes after looking at a computer screen all day? Chances are, you’re damaging your vision.

When was the last time you looked up from this screen? Chances are if you’re like most people these days you’re staring at not 1 but 2 or more screens right now, alternating between them without looking away. No big deal, right? Wrong. You could be doing serious damage to your eyes with all that technology.

Between 2010 and 2014, the average daily time spent using tablets and smartphones jumped from 1 to 5 hours a day. All that blue light is making your eye work overtime. Blue light flickers and creates glare, causing headaches, fatigue, and eye strain.

Computer vision syndrome is just one of the many maladies that can befall you if you spend too much time staring at screens. Blurred vision and sensitivity to light are just the start. You can also end up with burning eyes and migraines.

Dry eye is almost never taken seriously, though it can lead to serious medical eye problems. Staring at screens all day can make you forget to blink, leading to irritated, dry, scratchy eyes that aren’t producing enough tears. You may even need medical intervention. Don’t forget to blink!
