Spotify has submitted an update to its iPhone app that could allow US users to pay for subscriptions and other services without using Apple’s payment system.
This comes right after a major court decision in the Epic Games vs Apple case, which ruled that Apple can no longer block apps from directing users to alternative payment methods or charge a fee for purchases made outside of its system.
In a blog post, Spotify called the ruling the most important step yet in challenging Apple’s control over app payments.
Although other governments have tried to limit Apple’s practices, this US court decision is expected to have a much greater impact, potentially benefiting app users worldwide.
If Apple approves the update, Spotify users in the US will see some big changes in the app.
They’ll be able to view exact prices for subscriptions, see promotional discounts, and easily switch between different Premium plans like Student, Duo, or Family.
Most importantly, users will be able to pay through Spotify’s own website instead of being forced to use Apple’s payment system.
Spotify believes this change will also help creators in the future, allowing users to buy things like audiobooks more easily and directly.
Spotify criticized Apple for blocking these features for years, even though a court had previously allowed them.
The company described the delay as “absurd” and emphasized that these updates are just common-sense features every app should have.
However, it’s still unclear whether Apple will approve this app update. Spotify and Apple have clashed many times before, especially over how Spotify is allowed to sell its services on iPhones.
Spotify isn’t alone in this effort. Patreon, another popular platform, also announced that it plans to submit a similar update that lets creators accept payments outside of Apple’s system.
This signals a larger shift in how app developers may soon be allowed to do business on Apple devices, giving users more choices and potentially lowering costs.
