Amazon has just released two new e-readers in its Colorsoft series, adding to the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition that came out in October 2024.
The new models include a more affordable version called the Kindle Colorsoft and a kid-friendly version called the Kindle Colorsoft Kids.
The regular Kindle Colorsoft is like the Signature Edition, but with a few changes to bring the price down. It has less storage (16GB instead of 32GB) and no wireless charging.
However, it still includes the popular adjustable warm light, which makes reading easier on the eyes.
Even without wireless charging, the device has a long battery life, which should satisfy most users.
The new Kindle Colorsoft sells for $250 (or £240) and includes three free months of Kindle Unlimited, Amazon’s subscription service that gives you access to a huge library of books.
After that, the service costs $12 (or £9.50) per month. Like the Signature model, the Colorsoft stands out from traditional Kindles because of its color screen.
This makes reading comics, books with pictures, and browsing your library much more visually enjoyable than the usual black-and-white Kindle screen.
The Kindle Colorsoft Kids is specially made for younger readers. It has the same color screen as the adult version but comes packed with kid-friendly features.
These include tools like Vocabulary Builder and Word Wise to help children learn as they read, the OpenDyslexic font for those with reading difficulties, and a two-year worry-free guarantee.
Parents can also use the Amazon Parent Dashboard to control content and set limits like bedtime.
The Kids version also includes a full year of Amazon Kids+, which offers a large library of age-appropriate books, and comes with a fun protective cover, either Fantasy River or Starlight Reading.
It costs $270 (or £260), and Kids+ costs $6 (or £5) per month after the first year.
Both new Colorsoft models are now available on Amazon.
The company is aiming for a smoother launch this time, especially after the Signature Edition had some early issues with screen problems that delayed shipments.
Do you think Amazon’s more affordable Kindle Colorsoft will finally make color e-readers mainstream? Or is the $250 price point still too high for most readers who just want basic books? Tell us below in the comments, or reach us via our Twitter or Facebook.
