OpenAI is reportedly developing its own version of a social media platform similar to X/Twitter, although the project is still in its early stages.

According to a report from The Verge, there’s already an internal prototype that includes a social feed and focuses on content created by ChatGPT’s image-generation tools

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has been quietly seeking feedback on the concept from people outside the company, though it’s not clear yet whether the platform will be launched as a separate app or added to the existing ChatGPT app.

The company hasn’t made any official announcements yet.

If OpenAI goes ahead with this, it could intensify the ongoing rivalry between Altman and Elon Musk, especially after Musk offered to buy OpenAI for nearly $100 billion earlier this year, a move Altman declined with a sarcastic counteroffer to buy X/Twitter instead.

The social app would also put OpenAI in direct competition with Meta, which is said to be working on a similar feature for its upcoming AI assistant.

Altman has hinted at OpenAI possibly entering the social media space before, likely in response to these developments.

One big reason OpenAI might want to build its own social network is access to fresh, real-time user data, something both Musk’s Grok AI and Meta’s Llama AI already benefit from.

Having its own platform would let OpenAI gather unique data to help improve its AI systems.

Part of the idea behind OpenAI’s prototype is to use AI to help people create more engaging or entertaining posts, possibly with the help of tools like ChatGPT or image generation

The report also mentions that industry insiders believe there’s growing envy over Grok’s ability to help users write viral tweets.

Still, it’s uncertain whether this X-like social network experiment from OpenAI will ever see the light of day.
