PlayStation has opened a new game studio under the umbrella of PlayStation Studios called Dark Outlaw Games, led by Call of Duty veteran Jason Blundell

Blundell first confirmed the existence of this new game studio while talking to Jeff Gerstmann at The Jeff Gerstmann Show. On the podcast, Blundell said,

I’ve had the amazing opportunity to create a new studio within PlayStation Studios for Sony. The studio is called Dark Outlaw. And so Dark Outlaw Games have been working away in the shadows for a while, and when we’ve got something to talk about, we’ll step out into the light.

This is Blundell’s second major collaboration with PlayStation Studios

Opening up a new first-party game studio is a refreshing move for Sony, especially since the company has been closing down studios one after another since 2021.

ComicBook notes that the company’s recent shutdown includes prominent names like Firewalk Studios, Japan Studio, London Studio, Neon Koi, and Pixelopus.

Conversely, Sony has pivoted to acquisitions to stack up its first-party offering by taking over studios such as Bungie, Insomniac Games, and Bluepoint Games.

Now, the company has decided to establish a new studio behind the scenes.

As for Blundell leading the new studio, it doesn’t come as a surprise given his history with PlayStation Studio.

In 2021, Blundell established Deviation Games, which partnered up with PlayStation. However, for one reason or another, Blundell left the studio in 2022, and Deviation eventually closed its doors in 2024 without even releasing its first title.

Now, it seems PlayStation doesn’t have any squabble with Blundell and wants to work with him.

The news of PlayStation’s new first-party studio comes at a tumultuous time for the company. Its new live service shooter, Concord, failed miserably and was forced to shut down within a month of its launch, with several game cancellations and more.

And it looks like Dark Outlaw will continue operating in the shadows until it’s ready to show off its first project, which could be years away.
