In a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Sony has launched its own production studio focused on bringing PlayStation video games to the big screen. Called PlayStation Productions, there will be plenty of source material for the company to draw on thanks to a huge library of games and characters.
Just how many originals? Over 100, according to the report. With IPs like Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper, God of War, and The Last of Us, just to name a few, there is a ton of ways Sony and PlayStation Productions can take this.
Video game movies have, for the most part, been pretty terrible. While you could argue that some previous video game movies have been well-made, there is rarely a good connection between the gamers that played the games and the movies themselves. PlayStation Productions could help change that. Just look at what Marvel has done with its cinematic universe.
Asad Qizilbash will lead the new company, with Shawn Layden, chairman of Worldwide Studios at SIE, overseeing the projects
Layden tells The Hollywood Reporter that “We’ve got 25 years of game development experience and that’s created 25 years of great games, franchises and stories.”
As of now, no examples have been given as to what we could see from the studio, but Qizilbash notes that it could be in both the form of movies and television shows, noting that “Ultimately, the story will determine the format.”
