You can now use Facebook Messenger without a Facebook account

If you ever needed a reason to kick your Facebook account to the curb, the company may have a solution that still keeps you in their ecosystem. Starting today, users can sign up for Facebook Messenger without a FB account. Meaning all you’ll need is a phone number, fist name, and last name.

When a new user downloads the app, they’ll be presented with a new log-in screen. Instead of logging in with Facebook, newcomers can just simply tap the “Not on Facebook” option, which leads to another screen where they’ll enter in their name and phone number.

Although having the ability to use FB Messenger without an official Facebook profile is great and all, it could make things confusing if you have multiple devices. In other words, a chat you see on your iPhone may not sync up with your iPad.

This is possibly a step in the right direction for the company if they have any intentions of making SMS obsolete, which still, may prove to be difficult.

Josh Constine from TechCrunch makes a great point in his original report:

Essentially, Facebook realized that not everyone wants a social network or News Feed, but everybody chats.
