Apple has reached an agreement to acquire the popular photo editing app maker Pixelmator, the company behind Pixelmator Pro, Pixelmator for iOS, and Photomator

The Pixelmator team revealed the news in a blog post on Friday and stated that its applications will not undergo any material changes for the time being. The deal is currently pending and subject to regulatory approval.

Pixelmator, an almost two-decade-old company based in Vilnius, Lithuania, has developed a well-crafted suite of creative tools to compete with Adobe’s.

The company’s apps are exclusively available on Apple’s platforms, including Mac, iPad, and iPhone.

Pixelmator now has a new home

In its statement, the photo editing app maker has stated its enthusiasm about joining Apple, saying,

We’ve been inspired by Apple since day one, crafting our products with the same razor-sharp focus on design, ease of use, and performance. And looking back, it’s crazy what a small group of dedicated people have been able to achieve over the years from all the way in Vilnius, Lithuania. Now, we’ll have the ability to reach an even wider audience and make an even bigger impact on the lives of creative people around the world.

Pixelmator is a long-standing part of the Apple ecosystem, delivering powerful and incredible applications like Pixelmator Pro and Photomator.

If you are unfamiliar with it, Pixelmator Pro is a professional image editor, while Photomator is a photo editor tool for Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro.

Apple acquires companies regularly. However, making a public announcement like this is rare, which means it’s a big step in whatever Apple has planned.

A recent example of this is Apple’s acquisition of Dark Sky in 2020.
