Instagram has just released a new video editing app called Edits, available now for free on both iPhone and Android.

This app is designed specifically for content creators and is Instagram’s answer to CapCut, the popular editing app linked to TikTok.

CapCut is widely used by TikTok users to create polished, creative videos, and now, Instagram is offering a similar tool for its own users.

Edits isn’t just about trimming clips and adding music. It’s packed with advanced features that go beyond what you can do in the regular Instagram app.

For example, users can use AI-powered animation to make still images move, replace backgrounds with green screen effects, and even isolate people or objects from photos and videos with cutout tools.

It also helps creators stay organized with project tracking tools, space for writing down ideas, and analytics to see how videos are performing.

This move comes after a brief period earlier this year when both TikTok and CapCut disappeared from US app stores.

While they later returned, the timing of Instagram’s announcement made it clear that Meta sees CapCut as direct competition and wants to offer its users an alternative.

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has been open about the similarities between Edits and CapCut.

However, he insists that Edits is aimed more at serious creators rather than everyday users who just want to make fun videos.

He also claims Edits will grow into something quite different, with more creative tools and a niche audience.

Looking ahead, Instagram has plans to add even more features to Edits. These include keyframes (which help with smooth animations), more AI-powered effects, and tools that let users collaborate on videos.

With Edits, Instagram wants to offer pro-level video editing tools, giving creators more power, flexibility, and room to be creative, all from their phones.
