ChatGPT is about to get a lot more suggestive. 

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that the company plans to let its chatbot engage in erotica for verified adults, a surprising pivot for a tool best known for summarizing emails and writing code. 

After years of steering clear of NSFW content, Altman says it’s time to “allow more user freedom for adults,” while tightening controls for teens. 

ChatGPT’s next update could be less office assistant, more digital romance novelist.

Altman framed it as a matter of free choice. “We’re not the elected moral police of the world,” he posted on X (Twitter).

He compared the new system to how society handles R-rated movies. Adults can handle adult content, thank you very much.

It’s a bold and risky move. Sexualized AI has been one of the internet’s fastest-growing and most controversial industries since 2022. 

Researcher Zilan Qian of Oxford University notes that about 29 million people already use chatbots for romantic or sexual bonding. 

However, history shows that mixing AI and intimacy can go awry quickly. Platforms like Character.AI and Civitai have faced lawsuits, abuse scandals, and bans after their “mature” systems were exploited or went too far.

OpenAI’s challenge is to walk a tightrope between freedom and responsibility. 

The company is already facing a lawsuit after a teenager reportedly died by suicide following distressing interactions with ChatGPT. 

Allowing erotica introduces an entirely new layer of ethical and safety risks, especially given how fast people tend to blur the line between roleplay and reality.

Still, the business case is hard to ignore. ChatGPT subscriptions haven’t exactly been raking in billions, and adult content has a long history of, well, driving traffic. 

Altman insists OpenAI isn’t juicing growth, but let’s be honest: a chatbot that flirts, compliments, and coos in your ear might just be the next billion-dollar feature.
