Unboxing the VIE, you immediately have a sense of the manufacturer’s intention to elevate the product into the premium category. It comes in a padded box which, upon removing the lid, handsomely presents the main unit. Underneath, you’ll find boxes containing various tools and accessories, including cleaning supplies, filters, funnels, and, critically, capsules.

A key feature of the VIE system, the capsules allow for multiple use cases – the unit can be packed directly with flower or can be loaded with the included capsules. Capsules can be packed with flower, or you can use special capsules for oil and extracts. There’s also a handy carrying tube, which allows you to store and transport capsules safely and discreetly.

There’s a little bit of a learning curve with the VIE itself. To turn it on, you have to click the main button three times in quick succession, which initiates the warm-up process. Helpfully, the unit gives a quick vibration once warm-up is complete, which is helpful whether it’s being kept in hand, a pocket, or on a table, as it emits a slight buzzing sound.

Once the warm-up is complete, you press and hold the main button, and it will buzz again to indicate that the desired draw temperature has been reached. This can be a bit confusing, at first, as the vibration is used as both an indicator of the unit being on “standby” mode as well as the “ready to draw” mode. But once I got the hang of interacting with it, it was smooth sailing from there. It draws nicely and makes good use of whatever you happen to be vaporizing thanks to the handy and intuitive temperature settings.

Overall, I found the VIE to be an enjoyable experience. It was designed with the user in mind, and it really shows the thought put into it. It’s especially useful on the go: rather than walking around with a canister or bag and re-packing the device every time I wanted to use it, the capsuled made it a breeze to swap quickly and quietly and continue on my merry way. And, while not as slim as a standalone pen, it more than makes up for it in the versatility it afforded by accepting concentrates or flower as preference and supply dictate. At $99, the VIE is a solid buy. Go forth and vape.
