A couple of weeks ago a very interesting video made the rounds, purporting to be a foldable device from Xiaomi, with a twist – it had two foldable areas. We loved it here at KnowTechie, hoping against hope that it was a real device and not a well-done fake.

Well, thanks to a video that Xiaomi first posted to Weibo, then reproduced in part on Twitter (below), we now know the earlier leak was legit.

Xiaomi’s co-founder and president, Lin Bin, showed off the impressive handset in the video. With both sides of the device being foldable, it transforms from a normal candy bar shape to a pretty big tablet easily, while looking more aesthetically pleasing to me.

Sadly, that’s about all we know

No real details of the handset were given, although that’s unsurprising with any prototype device – it’s fairly unusual that we got a glimpse of it this early on. Still, Bin does claim Xiaomi has figured out multiple technical hurdles with the handset, such as adapting MIUI for the new form factor, flexible cover technology, and the all-important flexible folding screen tech.

Even with what’s visible being so interesting, it’s perhaps more interesting what we don’t see. There are no visible camera modules, either on the back or where a selfie cam would normally go. With the selfie-obsessed Asian market, I’m sure the device will include one eventually. Xiaomi probably just hasn’t decided on placement yet.

There’s also no mention if the ‘wings’ will house battery components, which is one way the handset could be made slimmer overall.

Is this leading up to a grand reveal at MWC 2019 next month? Probably, and I have no doubt that we’ll hear about foldable devices from most of the big device makers at that time.
