Apple has officially confirmed the CarPlay 2.0 delay. The company’s official CarPlay website said the first vehicles with its next-generation CarPlay would arrive in 2024.
However, only three weeks into 2025, the folks at MacRumors spotted Apple has updated its US CarPlay page, removing the 2024 timeframe.
Apple only removed the timeframe from its next-generation CarPlay page, suggesting that the new software will still be released at some point in the future.
However, Apple has not provided a timeline at this point.
Apple assures CarPlay 2.0 development is ongoing
Apple first showcased CarPlay 2.0 at the WWDC 2022, promising to launch it by 2024. After that, we didn’t hear from Apple until yesterday.
However, the first references to the next-gen CarPlay appeared in the iOS 18.3 beta code, and last month, Apple filed a few images for CarPlay 2.0 in the EU database.

Apple promised a deeper instrument cluster integration for the next-gen CarPlay, climate control, support for multiple displays on the dashboard, a dedicated FM radio app, customizable widgets, and more.
We had a glimpse of CarPlay 2.0’s widget UI a few weeks ago through a few leaked images, which looked great, reminding us of the widget UI of iOS.
Additionally, Apple promised that the new interface would be customized based on each vehicle and vehicle brand. Here’s what Apple said,
This next generation of CarPlay is the ultimate iPhone experience for the car. It provides content for all the driver’s screens including the instrument cluster. This ensures a cohesive design experience that is the very best of your car and your iPhone — with designs for each automaker that express your vehicle’s character and brand. Vehicle functions like radio and temperature controls are handled right from CarPlay. And personalization options ranging from widgets to selecting curated gauge cluster designs make it unique to the driver.
At this point, it’s unclear who’s to blame for the CarPlay 2.0 missing its 2024 deadline: Apple, the car makers, or both.
Now, Apple isn’t even providing a timeframe. However, the company’s decision not to close the entire CarPlay page is good.
It suggests that the new version of CarPlay may be released sometime in the future.
However, when and if CarPlay 2.0 launches, it will only be available on new vehicles, as it will not update the standard CarPlay software.
Apple said that several car makers are still planning to support the next-generation CarPlay. Here’s what the company said,
The next generation of CarPlay builds on years of success and insights gained from CarPlay, delivering the best of Apple and the automaker in a deeply integrated and customizable experience. We continue to work closely with several automakers, enabling them to showcase their unique brand and visual design philosophies in the next generation of CarPlay. Each car brand will share more details as they near the announcements of their models that will support the next generation of CarPlay.
Both Aston Martin and Porsche previewed the next-gen CarPlay instrument cluster design in December 2023. However, neither brand has rolled out the system yet.
