Last week we reported that the Switch firmware update 4.0.0 brought us USB headphone support. In another surprising twist, GameCube controllers can now be used with the Nintendo Switch. The video above from GameXplain shows how it’s done.
To get started, you will need a GameCube controller USB adapter, the one Nintendo released with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. Once you have those in place, the Switch will recognize it as a USB pad in the controller’s menu.

The only kicker going this route, users can’t rely on the GameCube’s ZL-equivalent shoulder button and the home button. For example, if you play Breath of the Wild, you wouldn’t be able to use your shield.
Either way, this is a good option for folks who prefer to play their Nintendo Switch with an analog controller. Who knows, we might even see GameCube titles available on the Switch.
