Meta is intensifying its focus on wearable technology, unveiling ambitious plans for smart glasses, smartwatches, and even earbuds equipped with cameras.

A key highlight of this push into augmented reality (AR) is the introduction of Oakley-branded smart glasses. These new glasses, named ‘Supernova 2’, will embrace Oakley’s signature Sphaera design.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the glasses will feature centrally positioned cameras tailored for athletes, effectively serving as dashcams for cyclists and other active users.

In addition to the Supernova 2, Meta plans to release a high-end AR model named Hypernova.

This version will integrate a display in the right lens, projecting notifications, apps, and various data directly into the wearer’s field of view.

A wrist-worn controller, dubbed ‘Ceres,’ will accompany the Hypernova glasses, enhancing user interaction.

This collaboration between Meta and Oakley’s parent company, Luxottica Group SA, builds on Meta’s successful partnership with Ray-Ban, which has made strides in combining fashionable eyewear with advanced tech.

While the Ray-Ban collaboration targets casual and stylish users, the Oakley partnership is aimed squarely at the athletic and outdoor market.

Meta’s strategic expansion into different consumer segments showcases its ambition to dominate the AR wearable space.

However, Meta faces significant challenges in balancing functionality, affordability, and consumer expectations.

The advanced features of the Hypernova glasses, such as their integrated display and controller, come at a steep cost, with prices expected to exceed $1,000.

The report mentions that the smart glasses could launch in 2027. Despite the hefty price tag, these devices position Meta as the current leader in AR smart glasses.

Meta’s efforts also face competition from other tech giants, notably Apple, which is reportedly developing its own AR wearables.

However, Apple’s offering may lack the branding appeal of Oakley, giving Meta an edge in both recognition and market penetration.
