The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are fast approaching their first birthday but hold off on the celebrations for just a bit longer. Reports of a pretty nasty camera issue are coming in from both the Google Pixel Help forum and on Reddit.

It seems like an issue with the optical image stabilization, which is supposed to smooth out small hand movements for clearer images but is having the opposite effect.

The rear camera on some Pixel 3 handsets has a gnarly shake

If you’ve got a Pixel 3 or 3 XL and want to check if you have the issue, the easiest way is to put your phone on a stand or other stable surface, then start recording in video mode. The image will jump around as in the video above if your handset is affected.

  • The smaller Pixel 3 seems to be more affected, but there are some reports of the larger 3 XL suffering as well
  • It sounds like a hardware issue, either with the optical image stabilization system or maybe the autofocus mechanism

There’s no official word from Google about this issue, so anyone affected should contact Pixel support. My Pixel 3 XL has some of the signs, just not as dramatically as the video, so it looks like I’m on track for RMA number 19

Have you had any issues with your Pixel device that seems related to the above problem? What did you do? Let us know down below in the comments or carry the discussion over to our Twitter or Facebook.
