Back in September, Apple introduced an inductive charging mat called the AirPower. Nearly 10 months later, the product has yet to get a release date. That could soon change, according to Bloomberg.
The AirPower should be released “before or in September,” according to a Thursday report. As Bloomberg explains:
Apple didn’t say when in 2018 it would release AirPower, but engineers hoped to launch the charger by June. The aim now is to put it on sale before or in September, according to one of the people. In recent months, some Apple engineers have ramped up testing of the device by using it as their charger at the office, another person said.
The oval-shaped AirPower allows you to change multiple Apple devices at the same time, including the iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and Apple Watch Series 3. A still unreleased optional charging case for Apple AirPods will also work with the charger.
So why the delay? Bloomberg says:
An executive at an Apple partner that manufactures third-party wireless chargers for iPhones, who asked not to be identified, said that the multi-device charging mechanism is challenging to build because it likely requires different sized charging components for the three types of devices, which would all overlap across the mat.
Apple’s attention to detail is legendary, so I’m not surprised to see this type of delay for a new product. Still, I would hope that going forward Apple would refrain from announcing a product that isn’t ready. The company did the same thing with the HomePod, announced in June 2017, but not released until this February, and with the Apple Pencil, which also suffered from long delays.
With that being said, whenever the AirPower does arrive, don’t be surprised to see it fly off the shelves.
Will you be buying an AirPower? What type of wireless charger do you use for your mobile devices?
