Apple ended its “exciting week of Mac announcements” with the new MacBook Pro models powered by the latest Apple silicon: M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max.
Now, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, wrote that “the MacBook Pro probably won’t get another true overhaul until 2026.”
Looking at Apple’s history, the company traditionally follows a four-year design cycle for its MacBook Pro, marking 2025 as the year of Apple’s Pro MacBook’s design overhaul.
However, according to Gurman’s report, next year’s M5 refresh will be just another chip upgrade, and we will have to wait another year for a total design overhaul.
Apple pushed back MacBook Pro a year to integrate OLED panels
The MacBook Pro design overhaul has been rumored for a while, and many speculated that the 2025 MacBook Pro model, with the M5 Apple Silicon, will likely see the light of day with the refreshed design.
Even Mark Gurman said in his report that Apple initially targeted 2025 for the next MacBook Pro overhaul.
However, things got delayed due to the display tech as Apple is widely expected to bring OLED panels with the next major MacBook Pro refresh.
The refreshed MacBook Pro is also expected to have a thinner design. Apple made the MacBook Pro models slightly thicker when the company transitioned to Apple Silicon from Intel.
Now, it seems Apple will be reversing that decision, hopefully without compromising anything significant.
Lastly, Gurman mentions that the M6 chip on the 2026 MacBook Pro models will be developed using the 2nm fabrication process.
This will likely bring a significant performance boost alongside a new display tech and a new design.
Meanwhile, the 2025 MacBook Pro models will be upgraded to the M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max chips, but other than the chip upgrades, there will be no major changes.
Either way, a MacBook Pro redesign is far away, and we will likely get more information about it as we near its launch.
In the meantime, if you are looking to upgrade your older one, you can pre-order the new M4 MacBook Pro.
