Apple is reportedly getting ready to release a new version of its Vision Pro headset as early as this year, according to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
The new headset is expected to come with a faster M4 processor and a redesigned strap aimed at making it more comfortable to wear.
The original Vision Pro launched in February 2024 for $3,499 and used Apple’s M2 chip, which is now a few years old.
The next model will likely focus more on AI, following Apple’s push to include advanced AI capabilities in all its devices, including iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
The upcoming M4 chip could come with more than 16 neural engine cores, which are parts of the chip designed specifically for running AI tasks.
If that’s true, this would be the first M4 chip to go beyond 16 neural cores, a feature only seen in Apple’s highest-end chips like the M2 Ultra and M3 Ultra.
Even with just 16 cores, the M4’s AI performance is more than twice as fast as the M2’s.
Apple is also reportedly working on improving the comfort of the headset, which currently weighs about 1.4 pounds.
Many users have said that wearing the headset for long periods can cause neck and head discomfort.
Apple is testing new strap designs to address this issue.
In the past, reviewers found that the headset felt most comfortable when Apple’s Solo Knit Band was combined with a third-party $50 Belkin strap, rather than using Apple’s included bands alone.
In addition to this updated version, there are also rumors, from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, that Apple could launch an even more powerful version of the headset with an M5 chip by the end of 2025.
Looking further ahead, both Kuo and Gurman suggest Apple is planning to launch a lighter and more affordable Vision Pro model in 2027.
Apple is also said to be working on AR glasses, which would be a slimmer, simpler alternative to the Vision Pro, and could compete with similar products from Meta.
