Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, currently has an age restriction that varies by country. In the United States, for example, users must be at least 13 years old to access Gemini using a personal or school Google account.

However, Google appears to be working on expanding Gemini’s accessibility, particularly for younger users.

Recent discoveries in the Google app’s code suggest that a special “Gemini for Kids” mode may be in development.

This new mode was found in the Android version 16.12.39 of the Google app, where hidden code hints at a child-friendly experience.

According to reports from Android Authority, this version of Gemini would allow kids to create stories, ask questions, and get help with homework, among other features.

The code also references a transition screen that would guide users from Google Assistant to Gemini, suggesting that Google is preparing to fully replace Assistant with Gemini.

To ensure a safe experience for younger users, Gemini for Kids will likely have strict content filters. These safeguards would prevent children from accessing inappropriate or harmful content.

This could mean stronger censorship, restricted responses, and better parental controls.

While the exact details remain unclear, the code hints that this child-friendly version would automatically activate if the user’s account is managed under Google Family Link or is otherwise recognized as a child’s account.

Another key reason behind this development is Google’s plan to completely phase out Google Assistant by the end of the year

With Assistant being retired, Google wants Gemini to take over as the primary AI assistant. The references to a “Switch to Gemini” screen strongly suggest that this new kids’ mode will launch before Assistant is fully shut down.

While not officially announced, these hidden code strings indicate that the release of Gemini for Kids could happen soon rather than later, possibly in the coming months.

What do you think about AI for kids? Do you think it should be allowed, even if with a lot more guardrails? We want to hear your opinion on the topic below in the comments, or via our Twitter or Facebook.
