Grand Theft Auto 6 is going to launch much later than expected
I mean, we all knew there was no way it was going to launch in 2025, right?

Rockstar has just announced that the next installment in its hit GTA franchise, Grand Theft Auto 6, has been delayed. The game will now release on May 26, 2026, slightly over a year from now.
Rockstar had released the first trailer for GTA VI at the end of 2023, with a “Coming 2025” teaser. We didn’t have an exact release date, but we have one now, and it comes with the announcement of a delay.
Rockstar announced this in a press release, expressing gratitude for the support from fans, and a promise to use the extra time to deliver on quality.
As long as it means fewer crunches and a more polished experience at launch, I think it’s okay for the game to be delayed. This is far from the worst delay we’ve seen for a video game launch, anyway.
Now with a release date set, we do expect GTA VI to arrive just then. The previous announcement had us wondering about when exactly the game would launch.
In other relevant news, we already have the PS5 Pro from Sony, a mid-life update that should be able to play GTA VI well. Xbox seems to have skipped that generation, but we’re set to get a whole new generation in 2027.
Also, Xbox just announced a game price hike to $80, following the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement, which was the first time we officially heard about games getting more expensive.
With PlayStation expected to follow, we might have to pay $80-$100 for Grand Theft Auto 6 when it launches. The game is expected to launch on consoles first, with a PC release set for later.
If my estimates are correct, we may see a PC release coincide with the next-gen consoles, which will likely get an upgraded version of GTA VI to take better advantage of the new hardware, all in 2027.
For now, however, you might want to plan a different holiday gift for the GTA fan in your life, because a 2025 holiday launch for GTA 6 just became an impossibility.
