WhatsApp is finally rolling out HD Video support for iOS and Android

Time to update your app!

Last week, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that support for HD photos is coming to WhatsApp. It is a long-awaited WhatsApp update that will finally enable users to send higher-quality photos if they want to.

During that same announcement, Zuckerberg also announced that support for higher-quality videos is also coming soon. Now, it’s finally rolling out.

You can now send high-definition videos on WhatsApp

According to TechCrunch, WhatsApp has fulfilled the said promise and has started rolling out HD video support. The feature will be available on the latest version of the app on both Android and iOS platforms.

Similar to HD photos support on WhatsApp, sending HD video is also going to be optional.

After attaching a video to a message, the app will immediately ask if you want to send the video in the default 480p quality or in the new HD quality, which translates to 720p. Unfortunately, there is no option higher than 720p.

On the other side, upon receiving the message, the recipient will have the option to download the said video in SD or HD quality. It sounds simple, but it’s an important addition, as it lets the recipient choose how much data they want to use.

The HD videos will also be end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) when you share them, like all other files and texts you send via WhatsApp.

The new HD video support has already started rolling out, but you need the latest version of the app on Android and iOS to use it. If you don’t see an update pending yet, it should appear in a day or two.
