Yesterday, on March 24th, Apple rolled out the macOS Sequoia15.4 RC (Release Candidate), and some Mac users have run into an issue.

Users with M4 MacBook Air or M4 Max/M3 Ultra Mac Studio while installing the latest macOS Sequoia 15.4 beta.

According to some Reddit posts, users are unable to install the update and get errors even if they try.

Apple rolled out the first macOS Sequoia 15.4 beta on the 21st of February with the plan of final release in April 2025.

The macOS 15.4 is supposed to bring a few improvements; perhaps the biggest one is the mail app’s redesign

There are also other titbits, like a new verification code timer for Apple Passwords and several new language support for Apple Intelligence to make using Apple’s AI more convenient in more regions.

So, what’s going on with macOS Sequoia 15.4 RC?

According to those users, multiple people have tried to download and install the macOS 15.4 RC, but all the attempts have resulted in errors. The error message reads,

macOS could not be downloaded. Make sure you’re connected to the internet and try again, or contact Apple support for assistance.

Apparently, Apple failed to provide a proper decryption key for the M4 MacBook Air and the new Mac Studio models. Hence, all the attempts to install the update resulted in an error.

As anyone would expect, Apple encrypts its software updates, and during the installation, a server-side decryption key is necessary. However, that specific key for the new Macs is not currently available on Apple’s software server.

So, installing the macOS Sequoia 15.4 RC for anyone with a new Mac won’t be possible until Apple resolves the issue.

On the other hand, if the user has a new M4 MacBook Air or M4 Max/M3 Ultra Mac Studio—a new Mac that has been running the macOS 15.4 beta 4—installing the latest 15.4 RC won’t be an issue.

My new MacBook Air M4 was upgraded to Sequoia 15.4 and suddenly emails with or without attachments could not be sent. Apple technician was unable to screen share and required the use of my iPhone’s camera to view the MacBook screen. After several minutes the tech reported a “known issue,” of which Apple was aware. When the “send” button is pressed, nothing happens other than the cursor automatically positions itself to the left of the first word or attachment icon. If the cursor is then moved to the right of the word or attachment, the email will send. This is the most significant issue as there are several others. So much for “beta testing.” Tech says that’ll be 2-3 weeks before a fix is announced.
