In 2013, James Howells made a costly mistake—he accidentally threw away a hard drive containing nearly $800 million in Bitcoin.

The hard drive was buried in the Docksway Landfill in Newport, Wales. After realizing his mistake, Howells offered Newport City Council millions to search the landfill, but local authorities blocked his efforts.

Recently, after a high court ruling in January 2023, Howells faced another setback. Now, he’s considering a bold new move—buying the entire landfill. Howells posted on X formally Twitter, “Funding secured,” suggesting that his plan might actually happen.

But authorities remain concerned about the environmental impact of excavation, and there’s no guarantee that the bitcoin is still recoverable.

Howells’ dream of reclaiming his fortune may come down to whether he can pull off this daring acquisition.

Will his gamble pay off, or will he face another crushing disappointment? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
