Meta is shutting down Messenger Lite app for Android

Meta initially launched two Messenger apps for the Android platform. One was the regular Messenger app, and the other was the Messenger Lite, a lightweight application preferred by a limited user base. A new report suggests Meta is shutting down the Messenger Lite app for Android. 

No more Messenger Lite app for Android

9to5Google has reported that Meta is shutting down the Messenger Lite app for Android, on September 18. The app was launched as a lightweight version of Messenger, ideal for use on slower data speeds. 

According to 9to5Google, if you open the app now, you will see a prompt that will ask you to use the original Messenger app. The Lite app isn’t even available for download on the Google Play Store anymore. 

Additionally, Meta has confirmed the app’s retirement via a statement to TechCrunch. Meta’s spokesperson stated, “Starting August 21, people using the Messenger Lite app for Android will be directed to Messenger or FB Lite to send and receive messages on Messenger.”

The shutdown of the Messenger Lite app will come alongside another important change for Android from Meta. After September 28th, you will be able to use the original Messenger app as your default SMS app on your Android smartphone.
