Lazy shoppers rejoice! You’ll soon be able to measure your feet from the comfort of your own home using Nike’s app. That’s all because of the newly shown-off Nike Fit, an augmented reality tool that uses a combo of computer vision, scientific data, AI and other nerdy stuff to scan your feet and recommend the right size for your toes.
Nike says that industry research shows 60-percent of people wear the wrong size shoes. That’s a lot of rubbed heels, bunions, or cramps.
To fix that, the AR scanning through Nike is simplicity itself: open a product page in the app, and there’ll be a new option next to the listing for measuring your feet
The app will then open your camera and ask you to stand next to a wall and point your phone at your feet. Once you get your phone level, the app measures your feet and the wall to work out scale. Less than a minute later you’ll have your recommended sizes for Nike’s footwear.
The app can tell if one foot is bigger than the other, and the recommended sizes are based on the individual shoe you opened the feature from. Those measurements are then saved to your profile, so you might never have to measure your feet ever again. If you prefer the retail experience, scanning a QR code in the app will let the shoe minions scurry off to find stuff in your size.
With my little one fast approaching toddler-size, this app is going to be a godsend. I mean, shopping is bad but shopping with kids in tow is universally terrible. Now, I’ll be able to measure her feet from home and order everything I need from the internet.
While the AR experience only has limited users right now, Nike’s so confident in the results from testing the feature that it’ll become a core part of its Nike app around July this year.
