When it comes to Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, one of the best things about these platforms is the fact that they are completely open. This gives third-party developers a chance to create compatible smartphone devices which can work with either platform.

JBL has taken this opportunity to develop a line of Google Assistant smart speakers which was recently released in 2017. This product line is a sub-brand of JBL and it’s been given the brand name Link. One of the most impressive products to be released under this new brand is the Link 300. This smart speaker was developed to compete with the likes of Apple’s Home Pod and Alexa-enabled Sonos One. While the Link 300 doesn’t look as sleek as those other models, for the price you really can’t go wrong.

The Link 300 is a well-built speaker that is attractively designed. Not only does the Link 300 allow you to use Google Assistant for its voice commands, it is also equipped with Google Chromecast. This will give you the ability connect to other Chromecast-based devices so that you can create a surround sound system that is completely wireless. Additionally, Link 300 speakers are Bluetooth enabled which will give you even more options.

When it comes to sound quality, the Link 300 puts out an impressive volume for its small size. With crystal clear sound, this model has a wide soundstage and deep bass. Its smaller size will allow users to place a speaker in an area that was never possible before.

Setting up the Link 300 could not be easier. With a direct Wi-Fi connection, you can log into the speaker on both Android and iOS devices using the Google Home App. Once you have chosen your network, you can give it a label for a particular room and you can even link it to other speakers via Google Chromecast.

The Link 300 comes standard with a volume control, two microphones and some other physical buttons. This allows the user to control the speakers’ volume and sound without having to sign into the app. Many people love to have physical control over their speakers and this is probably why JBL included these. To access Google Assistant, you can simply press the middle button at the top of the speaker. This will let you speak your command without having to say “Ok Google” or “Hey Google” first.

If you want to call out to the Link 300 and access Google Assistant, you can say “Ok Google” and the speaker will light up. This set of LED lights also doubles as a battery life indicator. You won’t have trouble getting the Link 300 to respond even in a large room. The two onboard microphones easily pick up sound and you will be able to command it by simply using your normal voice. But keep in mind that if you have music playing and the volume on the speaker is turned up, you will have to raise your voice to get it to respond. But this is a minor issue that most people won’t have a problem with.

While you can use the Link 300 with both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, we find that it works best with Google Assistant. Most basic tasks like listening to music and getting the local news or weather are handled by Google Assistant very well. This is probably because it is linked to Google’s renowned search engine that makes finding things really easy. But that’s not to say that Amazon Alexa doesn’t have its strong points. When it comes to smart-home control, Alexa comes in as the favorite platform because it can link to many different devices. It’s nice to know that you can use the Link 300 with both platforms so that you can get the best of both worlds.

The Link 300 is one of the best smart speakers on the market. Priced to fit just about anyone’s budget, you’ll truly get a lot for the money. The sound quality and ease of use make the Link 300 the perfect speaker for those looking for a well put together model. So if you are looking to add a smart speaker to your home, why not consider the Link 300 by JBL? You just might be surprised at how much it will make your life easier.
