Turning your household into a smart home can be quite expensive if you try to purchase everything at once. Instead, why not begin your smart home journey with smart LED bulbs?

One of the most affordable smart LED bulb assemblies on the market today is the Sengled Element starter kit. The kit comes with not only a hub but also with two high-quality bulbs. Priced at only $40, this unit is much cheaper than other similar models out there. Additionally, the kit comes with an app that will allow you to control the device using Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant among others. Below we will learn more about this amazing smart lighting kit and how it can enhance your life.

Setting Up the Device

After receiving the Sengled Element starter kit, I plugged the hub into my router. Next, I used the Sengled Element app which allowed me to connect to the hub using my iPhone. Don’t worry; Android devices are also compatible with the app too.

During the set-up process for the first time, Sengled will plant a tree for each light that you install in your home. Their goal is to plant up to 1 million trees. You can even select which part of the globe you want the tree planted in. Unfortunately, at the time I installed the app, only 6,711 trees had been planted.

The bulbs that come with the kit are only rated at 800 lumens, compared to Philip’s bulbs which are rated at 840 lumens. But I really could not tell any difference in the lighting quality and the Sengled bulbs are cheap which is an added bonus.

The App

The Sengled Element app is not as complicated as others, but it does lack some of the bells and whistles. But for the price, you really can’t complain. Using the app is straightforward, and all you have to do is select the room the bulbs are installed in. The hub is located on the first floor of my home, and it quickly found the bulbs which were installed in my attic.

The app’s dashboard is easy to navigate, and you can see which rooms have bulbs in them. Also, you can individually dim each bulb in different parts of the house giving you more control over your lighting.

The app also allows you to set-up and control three different lighting schedules that will let you turn your bulbs on and off at certain times. This is an excellent deterrent to theft and can help keep your home safe while you are away.

Compatibility

The bulbs are compatible with many different control devices including Google Home, Wink, Samsung SmartThings and Amazon Alexa just to name a few. This will give you many different options when it comes to controlling the lights in your home.

The Bottom Line

If you are looking for an affordable way to make your home smarter, the Sengled Element starter kit is a wonderful option. While the kit is not as robust as some of the other models out their, it gets the job done. The app that comes with the kit will allow you to control bulbs in every room and you have the option of setting up three different lighting schedules.
