Samsung’s latest flip phone, the Galaxy Z Flip 6, is here, and it addresses some of the biggest problems with its predecessor, the Flip 5. But is it more than just an iterative upgrade? Let’s dive in.
The Flip 6’s 3.4-inch cover display is getting some love with new widgets and features thanks to One UI 6.1.1. These new widgets include AI-powered suggested replies for messages and Photo Ambient, which changes your wallpaper based on the time and weather.
And yes, you can finally have more than one widget on the screen at once. It’s not revolutionary, but it makes the outer screen more useful.
A Camera Upgrade That Matters
The Flip 6 is ditching the 12MP primary sensor of old for a 50MP shooter. That’s a big jump and should mean better photos. On the flip side, the 12MP ultrawide is sticking around, but don’t expect a telephoto lens.

The phone’s FlexCam mode, which lets you take photos when the phone is propped open, is getting an AutoZoom feature that automatically frames your shot.
Battery Life and Power
The Flip 6 has a 4,000mAh battery, up from the Flip 5’s 3,700mAh. Combined with the more efficient Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, you should see better battery life.
Samsung managed to squeeze in the bigger battery while making the phone thinner (14.9mm closed vs 15.9mm on the Flip 5). You’re also getting 12GB of RAM as standard, up from 8GB on the base Flip 5 model.

Sadly, the fingerprint sensor and overall weight remain the same as the Flip 5. But the Flip 6 now has an IPX8 rating, which means it can handle dust better than before.
Out of the box, the Flip 6 runs Android 14, and Samsung is promising seven years of Android and security updates, just like the S24 series.
Is It Worth It?
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 starts at $1,099 and pre-orders are open now. It hits stores on July 24th. Colors include Silver Shadow, Yellow, Blue, and Mint, with some exclusive options on Samsung’s site.

So, is it worth the upgrade? If you have a Flip 5, I wouldn’t consider it a must-buy. The camera upgrade is nice, but the rest of the changes are just meh and iterative.
But if you’re due for a new phone and want something that’s more than just a slab of glass, the Flip 6 is a compelling option. It’s a flip phone that’s finally more than just a gimmick.
With its enhanced camera, larger battery, and sleek design, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 cements its position as a foldable phone that's more than just a novelty, offering a well-rounded Android experience in a unique form factor.
