Sony’s PlayStation 4 is still going strong, especially with the release of the Pro model. The world continues to upgrade and advance, and with that, we know Sony is inevitably working on the PlayStation 5. Most companies begin research and development right after the launch of a console. There are a few estimations on when the next PlayStation will be announced and released, but so far there is no substantial evidence to point out truth or rumor.

NPD Group analysts Mat Piscatella told Game Bolt that he is estimating the PS5 to launch in 2020. He was quick to add that the 2020-estimation was just that, an estimation.

“2020 is what I have in my forecast,” Piscatella said. “The data suggest there’s no need to do it earlier. But I’ve been surprised before so I’m as interested in this as anyone.”

Lewis Ward, who is the lead at IDC’s gaming research division, was on the opposite end and believed that Sony would arrive in 2021. He said he thought that the PS5 and next-gen Microsoft console would launch in the same year, but it was a tentative placeholder until more substantial evidence showed up.

Some analysts are expecting Sony to drop the PlayStation 5 later this year. There have been no announcements made by Sony regarding the PlayStation 5, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen. Sony announced the PS4 in February 2013 and released the console in November. If a 2018 release date is Sony’s target, they will have to be saving the announcement for E3 in June.

For now, we can only toss around rumors and speculate. A five to seven-lifetime span is usually the norm for console generations. This cycle has been different as we saw upgraded versions of the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X. At the end of the day, gamers want new and shiny toys to play with, and it is only a matter of time until that happens.
