Google’s Android Auto is poised to improve your in-car entertainment, potentially outperforming Apple CarPlay.

Starting in February 2025, drivers will gain access to a slew of new features, including video streaming, web browsing, and mobile gaming.

This expansion is part of Google’s initiative to improve its car-ready apps program, which was unveiled at the 2023 I/O conference.

The program aims to populate the sparse Play Store for cars with diverse app options that offer entertainment and utility while adhering to safety standards.

Notably, the apps must support x86 architecture, sidelining vehicles equipped with ARM chips, although some compatibility might be offered through Android Auto’s legacy mode.

Additionally, app resolution is capped at 24p to ensure safe and smooth functionality during use. Among the confirmed apps is AMC+, allowing users to stream content like The Walking Dead.

Access to these apps is restricted to cars certified with Google built-in, though Google has not disclosed the specific models.

This certification guarantees compatibility with program requirements.

The apps will not function on Android Auto for phones or third-party Android Auto displays, though future updates plan to extend compatibility to these devices.

Google’s full-fledged focus on Android Auto comes after years of the platform receiving little attention.

At the I/O 2024 announcement, Google promised significant updates, including support for larger screens, more app categories, and eventual integration into the mobile version of Android Auto.

However, details about the exact features and app lineup remain unknown.

Whether it’s streaming, gaming, or browsing, engaging with these features while on the road raises questions about safety and practicality.

Nevertheless, the prospect of playing games from a car’s entertainment console could redefine in-transit entertainment—albeit with potential risks.
