Apple has a radical iPhone refresh in store for 2027

It would offer a seamless edge-to-edge display, possibly with the front camera hidden under the screen.

By 2027, Apple is planning a major lineup of futuristic products to mark the iPhone’s 20th anniversary, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. (Via: The Verge)

One of the most exciting predictions is a new iPhone design that will be mostly made of glass with a curved shape and no visible screen cutouts, meaning no notch or hole for the camera.

It would offer a seamless edge-to-edge display, possibly with the front camera hidden under the screen.

This aligns with earlier reports that Apple is working on bezel-less iPhones in partnership with display manufacturers, though the screen may not curve down the sides like on some Samsung phones.

The idea of a “mostly glass” iPhone has sparked curiosity. Current iPhones are already heavily glass-based, so this version may go further, perhaps resembling earlier Apple patents that show a device fully wrapped in curved glass.

It might not be dramatically banana-shaped, but it could feature smooth curves and a continuous glass surface all around.

In addition to the new iPhone, Gurman says 2027 will be a big year for Apple across the board. He mentions that Apple’s first foldable iPhone could debut that year, as well as smart glasses to compete with Meta’s Ray-Bans.

Also expected are new AirPods and Apple Watches with built-in cameras. This comes a few days after an Apple exec said that iPhones may go extinct in the next decade

Another surprising addition could be a smart home robot. Gurman describes it as a tabletop device powered by AI with its own personality, hinting at something similar to a robotic lamp concept Apple researchers have been exploring.

Finally, Apple may introduce a significantly smarter Siri powered by an LLM, the same type of AI behind tools like ChatGPT.

To support this, Apple is reportedly developing new chips for its data centers, handled by the same team that created the Apple Silicon chips used in modern Macs.
