Apple Smart Home Hub postponed due to Siri upgrades delay

Apple’s long-rumored smart home hub, which would blend HomePod and iPad functionality with AI-powered HomeKit integration, has reportedly been delayed beyond its initial 2025 target. 

The device, internally codenamed “J490,” was originally planned for a March 2024 announcement but has been postponed due to Apple’s ongoing struggles with AI development, particularly related to the next-generation Siri.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple initially intended to introduce a more advanced and personalized Siri experience with iOS 18.4. 

However, these features were pushed to iOS 18.5 and now seem likely to debut between iOS 19 in September 2025 and iOS 19.4 in March 2026. 

Given that the smart home hub depends on these delayed Siri upgrades, Apple has also postponed its launch.

Physically, the J490 device is said to resemble a small iPad with a 6-inch screen, a front-facing camera, built-in speakers, and a battery for portability. 

It aims to serve as a centralized command center for smart home management, allowing users to control HomeKit-enabled devices seamlessly. 

Additionally, it will feature an intercom system and support FaceTime, enhancing its role as a communication hub for families.

Reports indicate that Apple has entered an advanced testing phase, allowing select employees to take the device home and provide feedback. 

While the revised launch timeline remains uncertain, speculation suggests an announcement at WWDC 2025 or later. 

This delay coincides with Apple’s broader AI efforts, which are now expected to play a major role in iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and the next macOS iteration.

Interestingly, the smart home hub may integrate with a rumored homeOS, evolving from the current TVOS and further expanding Apple’s ecosystem. 

The device is expected to compete with Amazon’s Echo Show and Google’s Nest Hub and has a projected price range between $130 and $230.
