OpenAI has launched a new AI tool called Codex, designed to help software developers write and manage code more efficiently. This is part of a research preview, meaning it’s still being tested and improved.

Codex is powered by a version of OpenAI’s latest AI model, codex-1, which is specially tuned to handle software engineering tasks like writing cleaner code, following instructions better, and testing its work until it gets the right results.

Codex runs in a secure, cloud-based virtual computer, which keeps your files safe and separate from the internet. If you connect Codex to your GitHub account, it can automatically load your coding projects.

Once set up, it can do things like write simple code features, fix bugs, answer coding questions, and run tests. You can still use your computer and browser normally while Codex works in the background.

Right now, Codex is available to ChatGPT Pro, Team, and Enterprise users, with plans to expand access to ChatGPT Plus and education users soon.

Initially, users will get generous usage limits, but OpenAI plans to add limits later, with the option to buy more time or credits.

Codex enters a fast-growing field where other AI coding tools, like Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude Code, are already popular.

Even major companies like Microsoft and Google say that AI now writes about 30% of their code. AI coding tools are becoming big business, with one top tool, Cursor, now valued at $9 billion. (Via: TechCrunch

Codex can be found in ChatGPT’s sidebar, where users give it tasks by typing prompts and clicking buttons like “Code” or “Ask.”

OpenAI sees this tool as a future “virtual teammate” that can handle time-consuming tasks for engineers.

OpenAI is also improving its Codex CLI, a version of Codex for the command line, using an updated model that’s cheaper and more efficient.
