With Apex Legends still crushing it in the world of battle royales, Fortnite hasn’t been quite as dominating in the world of Twitch streams and battle royale attention as it once was, but all things considered, it’s still doing just fine. Now, season 8 is upon us in the world of Fortnite and as usual, it brings some big changes to the map and mechanics of the title.
The reveal trailer that released confirms that season 8 will feature a pirate theme, cannons and all. As usual, the map has changed, bringing with it two new named locations – Lazy Lagoon (pictured above) and Sunny Steps. With season 8 comes a new battle pass full of skins, dances, and other items to grind towards during the season.

More about the new season of Fortnite
This season also brings about some changes in the vehicles that will be present on the map, and the game even pulls a page from some other games, as well. This season, the X-4 Stormwing, Shopping Cart, and All-Terrain Kart have all been vaulted, most likely never to see the light of day again. Also vaulted, the Chiller Grenade and Sneaky Snowman.
A new cannon also joins the fight and is sure to cause some hilarious hijinks. They will be placed around the map and you can push them around to get the perfect positioning. And like the open-world pirate game Sea of Thieves, not only can you load cannonballs into the cannons, but yourself, as well. You’ll be able to launch yourself and cannonballs a great distance, even going through structures before finally stopping with a bang. Direct hits with the cannonball deal 100 damage and small radius splash damage does 50.
Volcanic vents can also be found around the map, launching players and vehicles alike into the air and lava will be present on parts of the map dealing 1 damage per touch.
In a nod to Apex Legends, Epic has updated its ping system to allow players to double-click the world marker key to ping a danger area, alerting others on the team to possible threats. Another team update, called Party Assist, allows players to share Daily and Weekly challenges so everyone can work on it together.
