Google has finally rolled out dark mode for its web version of Google Calendar.

This update gives your schedule a sleek, modern look, making it easier on the eyes and more energy-efficient for devices with OLED screens.

The new dark mode isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s part of a broader update with a refreshed user interface in line with Google’s Material Design 3 standards.

According to Android Police, this update offers more customization options, allowing users to switch between light, dark, or device default themes seamlessly.

“Calendar is now available in dark mode!” You can choose between Light, Dark, or Device default settings, letting you stick with light mode or match your device’s theme if you prefer,” Google writes in a pop up describing the changes.

For those who previously relied on third-party extensions to achieve a similar effect, you probably won’t need it anymore as the native dark mode offers a cleaner and more integrated experience.

Why Did It Take So Long?

What took Google so long to catch up with this trend?

While major operating systems and apps have embraced dark mode for its benefits—such as reducing eye strain and conserving battery life—Google Calendar lagged behind.

Some speculate that Google’s focus on other projects delayed this update, while others believe it was the challenge of integrating dark mode into Google’s Material Design framework.

The response to the dark mode has been overwhelmingly positive, with users appreciating the more comfortable viewing experience it provides. Comments from the community highlight the ease of activating the dark theme and its visual appeal.

However, some miss the old third-party solutions, noting that the new dark mode can be too dark, affecting readability in certain cases. Hey, you can’t please everyone.

Overall, Google Calendar’s dark mode is a welcome update, and we can all rejoice in the battery-saving, eye-soothing goodness.

Do you think this update was long overdue or just in time? Are you loving the sleek new look and improved readability, or do you miss the old third-party solutions? Share your thoughts on Google Calendar’s dark mode in the comments below!
